How you Recruit Staff Sets the Tone of Your Song

Updated: Mar 28, 2020

I always ask people the same question – ‘What is the most important thing when running a restaurant?’ Some people say ‘product’, some ‘service’, and others ‘atmosphere’, but I say ‘STAFF’

– because without staff, you can’t provide any of these.

Imagine that your company is your body, and your staff/employees are the blood in your body. If you inject the wrong blood in your body, you will die. It will begin with a bad reaction, then spread everywhere, causing the whole system to shut down.

Have you ever entered a restaurant where as soon as you walked in, you felt a negative vibe from the staff? Maybe the staff had no energy, looked sleepy, were playing on their phones, leaning against a wall, looked as if didn’t want to be there, didn’t smile or greet you…

This is when you know that the staff don’t share the same values as the company.

While some companies might expressly share their core values, often the best way to identify these values is to watch how their staff behave.

My mentor once told me about Core Values.

Every company should have them. They are like guidelines for hiring people.

Without core values, you will not get the right staff, your recruitment selection / process will be tougher, and everyone will be on a different page, going in different directions.

With core values, you will get the right blood in your body.

Here are a few points that will help you recruit the right staff:

1. Create Core Values that relate to your Mission Statement

2. Create a better Interview System

3. Create a better Trial Shift Agenda

Firstly

Core values are the fundamental beliefs of your company. They indicate what your company stands for and how you want your staff to be. They are guiding principles that dictate behaviour and can help your staff understand the difference between right and wrong. It will help everyone stay on the right path to fulfilling the company goals.

By creating core values, you are setting a standard. This standard will allow you to recruit people that suit and fit in with you company.

Core Values are usually expressed in the Mission Statement. So, when creating them, make sure they are connected and go hand-in-hand. Let me give you an example...

Mission Statement: ‘To provide a happy, positive and memorable experience’

Core Values:

D - Develop E - Energy L - Love

I - Inspire

G - Grow

H - Happiness

T – Teamwork

In order to ‘provide a happy, positive and memorable experience’, you need to have the core values of D.E.L.I.G.H.T. That means whenever you interview staff, you have to look for candidates to make sure they have these, or can learn these easily.

Remember: Your mission statement and core values should be in-line and connected, relating to the kind of experience you wish your guests will get from you.

Secondly

Having a better Interview Structure involves creating a defined Hiring System that everyone must adhere to. There are many things to consider when doing so; for example - Where you place your advertisements,

- What content you include in your ads,

- What information you require in your application forms,

- Whether your structure is efficient enough to respond to applications,

- What your interview questions are,

- Whether your questions are standardised, etc.

There was once when I applied for a job, it took me 2 hours to fill in the whole application form. This told me how serious the company was, while also passing me the message of their company culture. I knew this company was not messing around. I could already predict the kind of job I was getting into, and their expectations from me.

Finally

Following a standardised Trial Shift Agenda, with a Trial Shift Evaluation to follow, ensures that all candidates are put through the same tasks and are assessed the same way. The Agenda and Evaluation should be created to help you determine whether or not the candidate will be able to complete tasks required for their role, and if they will fit in with the company.

By considering and implementing these three key points, recruiting the right staff will become much easier and streamlined. It will prevent you from wasting a lot of time and money from the beginning.

You will start seeing that your body (company) is functioning must more smoothly, with your blood (staff) being supplied to all parts (departments) efficiently.
